Amateur baseball roundup for June 2: Mount Vernon earns road Sunshine win at Alexandria

Jun. 3—ALEXANDRIA — Two runs in the ninth inning lifted Mount Vernon to a road Sunshine League win 4-3 on Thursday night over the Alexandria Angels.

Mount Vernon's Spencer Neugebauer had a seventh-inning double and a ninth-inning triple to drive in a pair of runs. As a team, Mount Vernon had three hits — including one from Cameron Deinert — but benefitted from three Angels errors.

Luke Tiesler was the starting pitcher for Mount Vernon, striking out four batters and yielding five hits in eight innings of work for the win on the mound. Deric Denning earned the save with the final three outs in the ninth.

Jed Schmidt threw eight innings, allowing two hits, two runs (both unearned) and struck out 14, with Tyson Gau taking the loss after pitching the ninth. Gau had two hits and an RBI, while Michael Schoettmer had two hits for the Angels, who scored a pair of runs in the third inning.

Mount Vernon (6-2, 2-0 Sunshine) is set to host Winner/Colome on Sunday, June 5, while Alexandria (3-3, 1-2 Sunshine) will head to Platte.

CORSICA — Tied at 8-8 entering the eighth inning, Parkston took control with two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to secure a win over Corsica/Stickney on Thursday night.

Parkston's Nate Doering recorded three RBIs on four hits in five at-bats, while Spencer Freudenthal had three hits and Dylan Mogck notched two hits and two RBIs. Matt Malloy scored three runs for the Mudcats, aided by drawing three walks. Jake Devine racked up 13 strikeouts in just five innings, but Jake Weber picked up the win in relief after tossing 3 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.

Corsica/Stickney was paced offensively by a pair of hits from Ryan Buck, Aaron Groeneweg and Nathan Blom. The trio accounted for seven RBIs, led by four on a Groeneweg grand slam in the third inning. Blake Moke and Caleb Crist split pitching duties for the Horned Frogs with five and four innings apiece and one strikeout per inning pitched. Each yielded seven hits and four earned runs, with Crist picking up the loss in relief.

Parkston (2-5, 1-2 Sunshine) is at Dimock/Emery on Sunday, June 5, while Corsica/Stickney (0-2 Sunshine) visits Winner/Colome on June 9.

EMERY — A big offensive effort — including nine runs in the ninth inning — sent Winner/Colome to an 8-0 start on the season and 3-0 in Sunshine League play with a victory over Dimock/Emery.

Austin Richey, Reed Harter, Oscar Pravacek and Drew DeMers had home runs for the Pheasants, with Harter finishing with three hits and four RBIs. DeMers had three hits, four runs scored and three RBIs and Derek Graesser had four runs scored and two RBIs. Chandler Bakley finished with four hits and Richey had three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored in the win. Connor Hopkins was the winning pitcher in relief, relieving starter Patrick Starr in the first inning. Hopkins allowed three hits, one run (unearned) and struck out six, with Reed Harter and Zach Harter covering the remaining four innings in relief.

Tyson Kayser and Sam Arend each had two hits for the Raptors, who led 4-0 after two innings, only to see Winner/Colome score eight runs in the next three frames for an 8-4 lead through five innings. Jason Schmidt was the losing pitcher, allowing seven hits and seven runs (four earned) in four innings of work. There were a combined 22 walks in the game, with 11 per side.

Winner/Colome plays at Mount Vernon at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. Dimock/Emery hosts Parkston at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 5 in Emery.

HUMBOLDT — In a wild Cornbelt League game, the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks pulled out an 11-inning victory on Thursday night, rallying out of a three-run deficit late for the win.

Runs were scored in 10 of 11 innings, including a decisive run in the 11th for H/H, with the Gamecocks picking up 17 of the game's 28 combined hits. Kyle Bailey had four hits for the Gamecocks, while Brandon McKnight drove in three runs.

Steve Mehlbrech and Kyle Tuschen each had three hits for the Cubs, with Mehlbrech driving in three runs and Peyton Cleveland driving in a pair. Tyler Earls threw five innings and struck out six, while Luke Loudenburg threw four innings and struck out three.

Salem (1-5, 0-4 Cornbelt) is back in action on Sunday hosting Dell Rapids PBR.

PLANKINTON — Behind a combined shutout pitched by Travis Gant and Josh Engquist, the Plankinton Bankers maintained their undefeated record by cruising past Colome on Thursday night in a Pony Hills League game. The Bankers scored four runs in the first inning and five more in the fourth, setting up a seventh-inning finish.

Plankinton's Gant went six innings on the mound, reaching double-digit strikeouts to three walks while limiting the Chaos to six hits. Offensively, Gant went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Engquist, who also had a double, came in to close out the game in the seventh inning and recorded one strikeout. Trevor Salmonson had three hits and scored three runs with two RBIs.

Colome's Kelly O'Bryan took the loss in a start after pitching four innings, during which he struck out six with four walks and allowed eight hits that resulted in nine runs (six earned). Jacob Beckers struck out three in a two-inning relief appearance. Shea Connot and Willie Beckers each had two hits, accounting for half of the Chaos' eight hits.

The Bankers (4-0) will continue Pony Hills play at Kimball/White Lake on June 9, as Colome (2-3) hosts Kimball/White Lake on Sunday, June 5.

CHAMBERLAIN — Chamberlain scored two runs in the eighth inning to outlast Kimball/White Lake and earn its first win of the season on Thursday evening in Pony Hills League play.

In a game tied at two heading into the bottom of the sixth, Mike Schwartz singled on a 0-1 count to bring Adam Schroeder home and take a one run lead. Evan Stiener and Dakota Munger had back-to-back singles in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the lead to three, which was enough to win a game at home.

Munger drove in three runs and went 3-4 from the plate for Chamberlain while Evan Stiener and Mike Schwartz had one RBI each. Adam Schroeder led the Mallards with three runs scored. Schwartz went all nine innings on the mound, surrendering six hits and three runs, while striking out nine batters.

Eathen Gaulke led the Nationals (4-1 Pony Hills) with two hits and two RBIs in four trips to the plate. Gaulke took the loss at the mound, allowing two earned runs in less than one inning. Zak Wallner pitched the remaining eight innings, striking out 18 batters while allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Chamberlain (1-3 Pony Hills) plays at the Plankinton Gold Sox on June 9. Kimball/White Lake heads to Colome on Sunday, June 5.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — A five-run fifth inning helped the Plankinton Gold Sox pick up a road win over Wessington Springs on Thursday night in Pony Hills League action.

Jesse Grosdidier notched three hits, including a double, with two RBIs to lead the Gold Sox offensively. Ben Laufman also had multiple hits with a double, while Tyler Urban had two RBIs. Five others had one hit, as Plankinton finished with 10 hits as a team. Ryland DeVries struck out 14 batters across eight innings while surrendering just four hits and four walks before Landon Bruinsma struck out the side in his lone inning of work.

The Owls totaled five hits, with Coy Fasnacht accounting for two of them. Isaac Kolousek had one of the other three and the lone RBI for Wessington Springs. Terrek Butterfield pitched five innings, striking out five with two walks and seven hits. Trey Weber and Gerritt Brandenburg each pitched two innings in relief and had two strikeouts apiece.

The Gold Sox (2-4) play at Four Corners on Sunday, June 5, while Wessington Springs (0-4 Pony Hills) hosts the South Central Storm on Sunday, June 5.

DELL RAPIDS — A strong road effort carried the Canova Gang to a Cornbelt League win Thursday by an 11-1 score.

Kendall Gassman kept the PBR lineup in check on the mound and earned the win. Garrett Gassman had a home run for the Gang, while Tim Gassman drove in three runs. Derek Miller, Jason Miller and Tim Gassman had two hits each.

Canova hosts Colman at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, while Dell Rapids PBR visits Salem.
