Amateur baseball roundup for June 30: Alexandria shuts down Parkston in Sunshine League matchup

Jul. 1—PARKSTON, S.D. — Playing at home, Parkston put up three runs in the first inning but was held scoreless after that as Alexandria steadily tacked on runs to claim a 7-3 victory in a Sunshine League matchup on Thursday night at The Pond.

Leading Alexandria was Michael Schoettmer, who recorded two hits and two runs batted in, while Jerrod Zens added two RBIs of his own. The Angels got a nine-strikeout complete game from Ethan Davis, who limited Parkston to six hits.

Brady Nolz smacked a first-inning home run to plate all three Mudcat runs, while Nate Doering picked up two hits in the contest. Dillon Stadlman and Justin Devine combined to pitch all nine innings for Parkston with seven strikeouts and seven hits allowed.

Alexandria (8-4) picked up its third straight win ahead of a July 5 meeting at Platte. Parkston will face Dimock Emery at home on July 3.

Tabor 7, Crofton (Neb.) 6 (11 inn.)

TABOR, S.D. — It took until the 11th inning to create the necessary separation, but Tabor ultimately outlasted Crofton (Neb.) in South Central League action on Thursday night.

Austin White and Joey Slama each notched three hits for Tabor, with White driving in two runs. Hunter Hallock struck out 14 in 9 2/3 innings of work on the mound.

For Crofton, Austin Tramp had two hits and two RBIs, while James Kaiser went nine innings and struck out seven batters.

Flandreau 16, Salem 1 (5 inn.)

SALEM, S.D. — The Flandreau bats came alive in a 12-run fifth inning that carried the visitors to a five-inning win over Salem on Thursday night.

Aiden Ladd and Jacob Patterson each had three hits for Flandreau, as Ladd drove in a team-high four runs. Brett Severtson pitched all five innings with eight strikeouts.

Isaac Anderson and Kyle Tuschen each struck out one batter for Salem.

Plankinton Bankers 7, Four Corners 5

PLANKINTON — Tied at 5 after seven innings, Plankinton's Alex Loes blasted a two-run home-run in the eighth inning to secure a win over Four Corners on Thursday night.

Loes went 2-for-4 at the plate, recorded four RBIs and scored two runs. Josh Engquist went 3-for-4 with one RBI while Preston Kristensen had one hit and one RBI. Cole Knippling, Chris Hill, Travis Gant and Drew Gerlach all chipped in with one hit apiece. Gant racked up four strikeouts and allowed seven hits as he pitched six innings, but Engquist picked up the win after allowing four hits and throwing three strikeouts in three innings.

Nate Hainy led Four Corners with four hits while Cooper Hainy led the team with three RBIs. Cooper Hainy and Jason Overweg had two hits while Nate Hainy and JD Farley scored two runs. Farley took the loss at the mound, striking out six batters, but allowed three hits and two runs. Josh Davies pitched five innings and surrendered seven hits and five runs.

Colome 4, Chamberlain 3

COLOME — In a Pony Hills League showdown that required extra innings and came down to a game winning play, Colome's Kelly O'Bryan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Chaos a 4-3 victory over Chamberlain.

Ben Connot went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one scored run while Korey Harris went 2-for-4 with one scored run for the Chaos in the win. Jackson Kinzer, Jake Luse and Shea Connot all chipped in with one hit each. Carter Brickman had seven strikeouts, and surrendered seven hits and two earned runs in eight innings. O'Bryan pitched seven strikeouts and allowed one run in three innings.

Mike Schwartz went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Ryan Randall went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Cole Nachtigal and Evan Stiener had one hit each as well. Stiener pitched 10 innings, struck out 15 batters, and allowed eight hits and two earned runs.
