'Amazing Race Canada': Derek Gerard, Jaspal Sidhu's act of kindness ends in elimination

While they were frontrunners throughout a lot of The Amazing Race Canada Season 9, Derek Gerard and Jaspal Sidhu have been eliminated from the competition in a surprising end to this week's episode in Ontario.

"It's really hard not to watch the show that you were on and think, 'oh I should have done this, ... we should have made this decision instead,'" Gerard told Yahoo Canada. "Because now we get to see it from everybody else's perspective."

"But I think something we have to remind ourselves is that we only got to see what we saw."

As Sidhu highlighted, despite the disappointing elimination, watching this season of the series unfold on TV has been an opportunity for the pair to see how well they actually performed, compared to other competitors.

"Watching the other teams and this whole season itself, we were definitely one of those stronger teams," Sidhu stressed."I'm very proud of that."

"Watching how other people are going through challenges and what they were going through, it definitely made me realize that we were definitely overthinking how bad we were doing in the moment. But now watching back, ... we were actually much more in control than a lot of the other teams were when doing challenges or just even communicating."

"I think something we could have done a lot better is not be so stressed and worried, and not be down on ourselves," Gerard added. "We immediately assumed that we were at the back of the pack and we were going home like every single time."

While the YouTubers experienced so many incredible challenges, Gerard said he struggled to be "in the moment."

"I really struggle with being in the moment, like even in my real life," Gerard said. "So when there's something on the line, like for example the bungee jump at Whistler, I completely blacked out."

"I'm going to be honest, I do not remember that bungee jumping at all because all I was focused on was, 'I need to see this phrase and we need to get out of here as fast as possible.'"

It wouldn't be The Amazing Race without a bit of competitive play or backstabbing, to put it more bluntly, and that's what Gerard and Sidhu experienced with fellow racers Jermaine Aranha and Justin Baird.

Early in the episode, during the waterpark challenge in Windsor, Ont., Gerard and Sidhu helped Aranha and Baird find the rubber duckies they needed to move on.

Cut to later in the episode, that act of kindness wasn't reciprocated when Aranha and Baird had the chance, after the poker challenge.

"If we [could] do over again, I would have found their rubber ducky and thrown it all the way to the back, back to B.C." Gerard said.

"Even that situation right there, we were second guessing ourselves," Sidhu added. "We're grasping at straws at this point because as you saw last episode, everybody was helping each other out, literally everybody, and we were the only team that didn't have help from anybody."

"Honestly, I love how Derek and I, we tried helping other teams out, but the only help we ever got was actually from Gracie [Lowes] and Lily [Bateman]. ... Other than that, we were kind of solo on this entire journey, which I actually quite like. I love the fact that we did that by ourselves."

Looking at the teams left in the race, Gerard and Sidhu are both very clear that they want to see couple Ty Smith and Kat Kastner take home the top prize.

"They were our biggest rivals," Sidhu said. "And watching them now, they're doing it the right way. ... How we would want to win, they're doing that."

"They're just beasts," Gerard added. "Watching them now and seeing how they even ... interact with other teams and how they complete challenges, they're doing great."
