Amazon cutting nearly 100 jobs in Jersey City, company announces

Amazon is laying off 93 workers at its Jersey City facilities, according to a public notice posted on May 1.

The lay-offs will affect remote corporate workers and go into effect in July, according to the public notice.

Based in Seattle, the e-commerce giant announced in January that it was cutting 18,000 jobs, plus another 9,000 jobs in March. In 2021, the company estimated that it employed 49,000 people in New Jersey. These lay-offs are part of that second round of 9,000 terminations.

Items are sorted before they are packed and sent out for distribution at the new Amazon center in Woodland Park. Representatives from Amazon, local politicians and partners that were involved in the planning and building of the new Amazon distribution center were given a tour of the facility as they celebrated it’s ceremonial opening on February 10, 2023 in Woodland Park, NJ.

Companies that partake in mass lay-offs are required to post advance notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, typically called the WARN ACT, which was recently expanded.

The law guarantees workers in a business with 100 or more full-time employees one week of severance pay for every year of service when layoffs impact 50 or more workers. It also guarantees workers at least 90 days notice when downsizing is on the way. Those notices are posted on the state Labor Department website.

This new law requires full severance for both full and part-time workers, unlike the old law. Companies are affected if they’ve been in business in New Jersey for at least three years. Under the law, companies with multiple statewide locations are treated as one entity.

A failure to comply with the new law will trigger an extra four weeks of severance payouts for employees, according to the legislation.

Bed Bath & Beyond, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and has 13 stores in New Jersey, is cutting nearly 1,300 jobs across the state.

Those lay-offs went into effect before implementation of the WARN Act expansion. Business Insider was the first to report on the timing of those layoffs, but Bed Bath & Beyond said it would “not comment on speculation.”

Because of misinformation provided by Amazon, an earlier version of this story misstated the locations of the jobs that would be eliminated. The layoffs will affect corporate workers only.
