Amazon Fresh on Route 17 in Paramus set to open next week

PARAMUS — Amazon Fresh will open in the borough’s Fashion Center next Thursday, said a spokeswoman on Friday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the location, which was formerly a Fairway Market, at 6:45 a.m. on July 21, said Laura Hayes, an Amazon spokeswoman. The grocery store will be open for business at 7 a.m.

The company has been posting jobs since January for floor leaders, paying $16.50 and up, and overnight retail clerks at the Paramus location.

Amazon Fresh started as an online grocery delivery service before moving to physical locations, with the first stores opening in Woodland Hills and Irvine, California.

Paramus isn’t the only North Jersey town that AmazonFresh is coming to. Amazon Fresh signs were up at the former Kmart site on Memorial Drive in Lodi this week, although Amazon's press office would not provide an opening date. More locations are planned for Woodland Park, Eatontown and Holmdel, but none have opening dates.

Amazon Fresh supermarkets are centered around technology, including high-tech shopping carts called Dash Carts that let customers pay for groceries without going through the checkout line. The smart carts scan and tally purchases. Alexa, Amazon's voice command service, will also answer customer questions.

The stores carry name brands as well as store brands. While Whole Foods, also owned by Amazon, bans products containing artificial sweeteners, high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors, Amazon Fresh carries mainstream products like diet colas.
