Streaming music via Amazon Echo devices could be about to get a lot cheaper, as Amazon is planning a ‘free’ service via Echo devices.

A report by Billboard suggests that the new service will put Amazon into direct competition with music-streaming giant Spotify.

The report suggests that the new ‘free’ tier will have a limited amount of music compared to rival services, and could be available as soon as next week.

Amazon already offers music streaming including via its Prime service in the UK, with a limited catalogue of two million songs.

A separate paid-for service, Amazon Music Unlimited, offers access to 50 million songs, for a monthly subscription, dependent on the number of devices used.

Spotify had 116 million ad-supported users and 96 million paying subscribers as of February 2019.

Amazon has said ‘tens of millions’ of paid customers listen to Prime Music and its standalone Amazon Music Unlimited service.
