You can now return Amazon items at more than 1,100 Kohl's nationwide
Got a few returns after your Amazon (AMZN) spending spree? You can now take them to your local Kohl's (KSS).
As Amazon’s Prime Day (July 15 and 16) and back-to-school shopping approaches, Kohl’s announced Monday that more than 1,100 of its stores nationwide will now accept Amazon returns.
Prior to the nationwide initiative, the department store chain and the retail giant started a pilot program in 2017 at only 100 stores in the Los Angeles, Chicago, and Milwaukee markets to allow returns.
Amazon stated in a blog post that its goal is to make buying and returning products “as easy as possible... we [Amazon] are expanding free, convenient returns on millions of items for our customers.”
To successfully return an Amazon purchase at Kohl’s, there is a five-step process. To start your return, visit Amazon’s Online Return Center and select the Kohl’s drop-off option. Amazon will then send you a personalized QR code to your email; with this code handy on your smartphone, bring your items to a participating Kohl’s location. Upon arrival, show a Kohl’s associate in the customer service department the QR code. Kohl’s will then pack, label, and ship your Amazon return for free.
The expansion of Amazon returns at more Kohl’s locations comes after Amazon stated in March that it will close more than 80 of its pop-up stores, which were mostly located within Kohl’s, Whole Foods, and shopping malls. Instead, certain Kohl’s locations will simply sell Amazon products.
By the summer of 2018, about 8% of Kohl’s customers in Chicago were making in-store Amazon returns, compared to 3% in the rest of the U.S., according to Earnest Research. Kohl’s percentage of new customers, defined as customers that did not shop at Kohl’s in the prior calendar year, is up 9% in 2018, versus 1% for the rest of the U.S.
Kohl’s is hoping the incentive of returning Amazon products in-store will help boost the number of visitors to its locations, which would translate to more people actually shopping and spending money in-store.
