Amazon plans to start streaming limited advertisements into Prime Video movies and TV shows from January 29, according to an email sent to its subscribers.

The tech giant said it would charge an additional fee if subscribers want to keep the service ads free. Such ads would be meaningfully fewer than linear TV and other streaming TV providers, the company said on Wednesday.

According to the firm, "This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership."

Earlier, in September, the company had announced its initial plans to introduce limited advertisements in Prime Video content, such as shows and movies, in the US, Britain, Germany, and Canada in early 2024. This would be followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later next year.
