AMBRIDGE — Facing a high number of positive COVID-19 cases within the middle school and high school buildings, the Ambridge Area School District announced a week-long closure of both buildings, effective Wednesday, based on a Pennsylvania Department of Health advisement.

Though Ambridge did not disclose the exact number of positive cases at the buildings, the district announced the one-week closure that runs until Jan. 26, and cancels all extracurricular activities for the building, including the rescheduling of The Mistletoe Dance to Jan. 29.

"The welfare, health and safety of our students, staff and visitors is of the utmost importance to the Ambridge Area School District. We have developed rigorous guidelines, procured necessary supplies, and held staff trainings to do everything possible to meet this goal," the district said in a statement announcing the closure. "Please remain vigilant against this public health threat which is circulating in our community. Together, we can work to prevent the spread of this virus and stand ready to do so."

During the school closures, the district said all students will log into their classes using Microsoft Teams remotely to receive their instruction, according to the statement, and Economy, Highland and State Street elementary schools will remain open and operate on their normal schedules at this time.
