And America’s Favorite Thanksgiving Pie Is…

So, first thing’s first: the best Thanksgiving pie is undoubtedly pumpkin, and if you disagree, you can take your lesser pastry and get outta here. But, according to a new survey, your holiday pie preferences may depend on where you live.

GE surveyed 1,550 people and found that, yes, overall, the most popular flavor is pumpkin. However, in some American regions, a different dessert took the top spot.

Who are these traitors, you ask? Not the Mountain, Pacific, Southern East Coast, Great Lakes, or Midwest areas. In Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, however, pecan reigned supreme. Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi were split between pecan and apple, and New England opted for apple all the way (as a Connecticut native, this one cut deep). The survey also explored whether people prefer to use “stuffing” or “dressing” for the classic Thanksgiving side dish. Stuffing won in a landslide, except for in Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

But back to the important stuff. Apple? Sure, it’s “as American as apple pie,” but you know what else is an undeniable societal staple? The unstoppable pumpkin spice—the flavor profile of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves—that’s in our lattes, our deodorants, our candles, and our pies. Because it’s delicious, it embodies fall, and it tastes great with a glass of red wine. There is, however, one statistic that is less divisive: 69 percent of Americans like their pie topped. Some with whipped cream, others with ice cream. Whether you’re dining on pumpkin, apple, or pecan pie this year, either of those sound absolutely delicious.
