American Airlines could slash 25,000 jobs

American Airlines said Wednesday (July 15) it's sending 25,000 potential furlough notices to workers.

U.S. law requires companies with a hundred or more employees to provide 60 days' notice of potential layoffs.

American, which had over 130,000 employees last year, had already warned that furloughs would be hard to avoid.

Now travel demand has slowed again--as the U.S. sees a resurgence of the health crisis and lockdown restrictions.

It's prompted several countries to impose travel restrictions on Americans-and caused airlines to scale back their schedules.

American isn't the only U.S. airline grappling with the indefinite hardship.

United has sent 36,000 furlough notices, representing nearly half its workforce.

And Southwest has also warned job losses will be hard to avoid.

In a memo to employees released Wednesday American said the notices are tied to the overstaffing it expects in October when U.S. government payroll assistance expires.

Unions representing aviation workers have asked lawmakers for another $32 billion in aid to keep hundreds of thousands employed past October - for another six months.
