American Airlines Flight Takes 12 Hours From Dallas To L.A.

A recent American Airlines flight took a surprising 12 hours to fly from Dallas Fort Worth, Texas to L.A., California. For those wondering, yes, this is a trip that typically takes no more than 3 hours. Adverse weather conditions are to blame for the delay.

The intended destination for this American Airlines’ flight was actually Tokyo, Japan. According to reports, on May 28, 2022, the American Airlines flight was due for 12hr55min flight to Tokyo.

More than 7 hours into the flight destined for Japan, the aircraft turned around and made its way back to the U.S. It was said that severe weather conditions were to blame for the disruption. The cause for disruption was a volcanic eruption in Bezymianny, a peninsula off the east coast of east Russia.

The disruption led to a reroute, and roughly a 4- hour journey back to the mainland. U.S. airlines don’t use Russian airspace; the event occurred on the Pacific Ocean. This specific location is not far from where most airlines crossing the Pacific normally fly.

The U-turn which prevented fliers from arriving at Narita airport in Japan was a swift decision made because ash from volcanoes can impact aircrafts. Other airlines flying on the same day managed to complete their flight services.

United Airlines flew a similar route that same day. A United Airlines flight – UA837 – from San Francisco (SFO) to Tokyo (NRT) arrived with only an hour’s delay due to a reroute. This United flight opted to fly further south to avoid the intense weather conditions. Another United flight coming from Houston made a separate successful landing, one hour later than predicted.
