American Airlines jet makes emergency landing in L.A.

A Boeing 777 was forced to make an emergency landing Wednesday evening at Los Angeles International Airport after reports of a possible mechanical problem.

While there have been some reports of a blown out tire, officials at American Airlines would only say that AA Flight 345, which was arriving from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, landed safely at LAX at around 8:45 p.m. after the pilot reported a “possible mechanical issue” before landing.

In an update Thursday morning, an AA spokesperson said “pilots did receive an indication that the pressure was low in one of the aircraft’s tires.”

The aircraft was able to taxi on the runway after landing and all passengers were able to get off the plane safely at the jet bridge.

There were no reports of injury to passengers or crew members.

This emergency landing comes just a week shy of a United Airlines jet traveling from San Francisco to Osaka, Japan, that had to be diverted to Los Angeles after it lost a tire during takeoff.

UA 35, which was carrying 235 passengers, 10 flight attendants and 4 pilots, departed SFO at 11:23 a.m.

KTLA sister station KRON4 obtained footage of the tire coming off the aircraft’s left landing gear and falling into a parking lot used by airport employees. Several vehicles were damaged, according to KRON4.

The flight was diverted to LAX, where Sky5 helicopter footage showed the Boeing 777 landing without incident at 1:27 p.m. and being immediately surrounded by emergency crews.

Boeing 777s have 14 tires, including 12 on its main landing gear struts, and are designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires, a United Airlines spokesperson said.
