American Crime Story is finally returning over a year after its last season.

Ryan Murphy and his team will next dramatise the infamous Monica Lewinsky/Bill Clinton sex scandal from the late 1990s in Impeachment: American Crime Story, set for a September 27, 2020 premiere.

Sarah Paulson will reunite with Murphy, after skipping out on both The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and the upcoming American Horror Story: 1984.

Emmy winner Paulson has been cast as Linda Tripp, the US Department of Defense civil servant who secretly recorded conversations with friend and coworker Lewinsky about the affair with Clinton.

Lewinsky will be played by Booksmart star Beanie Feldstein, while The Assassination of Gianni Versace's Annaleigh Ashford returns to play Clinton accuser Paula Jones.

The series will be based on A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President by Jeffrey Toobin, who also wrought the book used for The People v. O. J. Simpson.

FX chairman John Landgraf announced today: "FX’s American Crime Story franchise has become a cultural touchstone, providing greater context for stories that deserve greater understanding like the O.J. Simpson trial and saga, and Andrew Cunanan’s tragic crime spree which concluded with the assassination of Gianni Versace.

"This franchise re-examines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant, nuanced and entertaining. Impeachment: American Crime Story will likewise explore the overlooked dimensions of the women who found themselves caught up in the scandal and political war that cast a long shadow over the Clinton Presidency."

American Crime Story airs on FX in the US and BBC Two in the UK.
