American Dream helicopter was not required to be inspected, state officials said

A decorative helicopter at the American Dream waterpark that fell into the pool below and injured four people was not required to have been inspected after the park opened, state officials said.

State officials found that damage to the wire holding the helicopter had caused the fall.

“The helicopter-themed feature, along with all other suspended themed features, were inspected during building construction,” said Lisa Ryan, a spokesperson for the state’s Department of Community Affairs.

Ryan said that “as per the Uniform Construction Code, there are no requirements for ongoing inspections of suspended themed features or other hanging objects once the building is complete and approved for occupancy.”

New Jersey’s DCA includes the state’s Amusement Ride Safety Unit, an arm of state government that inspects amusement and water parks like DreamWorks Water Park, where the crash happened.

That unit ultimately shut down the park for nearly a week while the inspection was underway.

The water park has several displays suspended from the ceiling over its main pool, including giant figures of Shrek and Kung Fu Panda.

Ryan said that the third party engineering firm that did the inspection, French & Parrello Associates, “deemed the current remaining features to be structurally sound and safe for continued use.”
