American Family Field's scoreboard will be upgraded for the 2024 season − a major project to be paid for by the Milwaukee Brewers ballpark's publicly financed owner.

The Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District will spend $6.45 million to replace the ballpark's main scoreboard, which is nearing the end of its 10-year life, according to Tim Sheehy, district board president.

"The current scoreboard is living on borrowed time," Sheehy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The new scoreboard will be the fourth-largest in Major League Baseball, he said, with double the size of the current scoreboard's video display board.

The district board voted 5-1 Thursday to approve the project. The district is a state-created agency which owns American Family Field and is responsible for most major capital improvements under the terms of its lease with the Brewers.

However, a proposal to spend $2 million to add a secondary scoreboard was tabled for lack of support from the board.

Those votes came after an unusually lengthy three-hour closed session − which the Wisconsin Open Meetings Law allows to discuss certain legal and contractual issues.

Much of that discussion in closed session was on whether the secondary scoreboard is an item that can be charged to the stadium district, or the Brewers, Sheehy said.

Another proposal, to upgrade the broadcast control booth, will be reviewed after the team has a cost estimate. That could happen at the board's June 13 meeting.

The district board's vote comes as Gov. Tony Evers and state legislators continue to discuss a proposal to fund the ballpark's long-term improvements.
