An American flag to remember late Canandaigua resident by

CANANDAIGUA — Susanne Kennedy was the last living charter member of the Canandaigua Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution before she died earlier this year.

Kennedy, of course, had many other accomplishments in a life well led, all of which prompted the local organization, which was founded 45 years ago and also counted Kennedy’s mother as a charter member, to dedicate an American flag in memory and honor of her.

The flag was dedicated at a ceremony Thursday at Outhouse Park and presented to the town of Canandaigua.

“It was a real honor to know her,” said Regent Suzonne Wied, before presenting the flag to Supervisor Jared Simpson.

Susanne (Garnder) Kennedy, who taught 11th and 12th grade honors English at Canandaigua Academy shortly after coming to Canandaigua, helped establish the first Head Start in the area in the 1960s. She also served as president of the F.F. Thompson Hospital Guild, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Ontario County United Way and Ontario County Historical Society.

Kennedy, who married Bruce M. Kennedy in 1958, was involved in many other charitable pursuits during her life.

As such, in 2020, she was awarded the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Simpson said the flag will be displayed at a prominent spot such as Town Hall or Onanda Park, because of her love for Canandaigua Lake.

“We want it to be seen and appreciated,” Simpson said.

The flag comes from another prominent spot, having flown over DAR headquarters in Washington, D.C., as recently as June before coming Canandaigua's way, Wied said.

“Her heart and soul was here,” Wied said.
