‘American Idol,’ Broadway stars Diana DeGarmo, Ace Young to tell Patsy Cline story

Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, a married couple who are both alums of TV’s American Idol” and multiple Broadway shows and national tours, will perform three Cape Cod shows together to tell the story of legendary country singer Patsy Cline.

Dean Regan’s musical “A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 17-19 at College Light Opera Company’s John R. Lucas Hall, 54 Chapoquoit Road, West Falmouth. It’s the first collaboration between CLOC and Art Lab, a commercial producer of theater in Boston, on Broadway and beyond — but “what we hope is the first of many,” CLOC officials say.

The show is directed and produced by Meg Fofonoff, executive director of Art Lab, and Sean Mayes (associate conductor on Broadway’s “Hadestown”) is music director. DeGarmo plays Cline in what an announcement of the show says is a realization of a lifelong dream, and Young plays Little Big Man/DJ.

In announcing the show, producers called Cline “a country music legend” and “woman ahead of her time (who) truly changed the course of country music. She lit up the stage with her honesty and passion.” The musical includes more than 20 Cline hits, including "Crazy" and "Walkin' After Midnight," and tells her story from her Virginia hometown to the Grand Ole Opry and Carnegie Hall, according to the show website.

DeGarmo was runner-up in “Idol”’s Season 3, and later theater credits include “Hairspray” and “Hair” on Broadway and “9 to 5” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on national tour. She recently played Cline for Stages St. Louis. Young, who is also a songwriter, was part of Season 5 of “Idol,” with Broadway credits that include “Grease” and “Hair,” plus the “Joseph” national tour.
