American Idol season 20 spoilers follow.
The 20th season of American Idol has found its winner, after a night of duets between the contestants and top performers.
The ABC singing contest has seen the likes of Sara Bareilles and Michael Bublé as well ss judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie take to the stage to sing with the 20 participants.
At the end of an intense finale, country singer Noah Thompson was crowned winner, with HunterGirl as a runner-up.
Thompson, who had performed 'I'm Not The Only One' with Melissa Etheridge on the night, sang his song 'One Day Tonight' to close the season.
"Had a hard time making this post because I truly couldn't find the words to say. I was in complete shock in this moment and I still am and I probably always will be!" Thompson wrote on Instagram after his win.
"Thank you all for giving me this opportunity, thank you for everyone who voted, thank you guys so much for everything!! I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you all so thank you guys so so much. I'm looking forward to continuing this journey and seeing where this thing goes. Love all of you all."
Last year, American Idol experienced some controversy when a resurfaced video of contestant Caleb Kennedy also featured someone with what looked like a Ku Klux Klan hood on.
The singer announced his exit from the music competition as a result, after making it into the Top 5.
"There was a video that surfaced on the internet and it displayed actions that were not meant to be taken in that way," he wrote, apologising to his fans.
"I was younger and did not think about the actions, but that's not an excuse. I wanna say sorry to all my fans and everyone who I have let down."
American Idol airs on ABC.
