South Carolina’s Warren Peay is a top 10 contestant on “American Idol.”

The results were announced at the end of the live show Sunday night.

Also in the top 10 were Colin Stough, 18, from Mississippi; Haven Madison, 17, from Tennessee; Iam Tongi, 18, from Hawaii; Marybeth Byrd, 21, from Arkansas; Megan Danielle, 20, from Georgia; Oliver Steele, 25, from Tennessee; Tyson Venegas, 17, from Canada; Wé Ani, 23, from New York; and Zachariah Smith, 19, from Mississippi.

The judge’s saves from last week — Lucy Love and Nutsa — were eliminated this week.

It was rock ‘n’ roll night on Idol. Peay sang the Animals’ song “House of the Rising Sun.” He told Adam Lambert, the 2008 Idol runner and Sunday night’s mentor, that he related to the song because he had been in dark places in his life.

Singing about it, Lambert said, is “like therapy.”

But there was nothing dark about Peay Sunday night. He announced he and his girlfriend Sarah Elizabeth were engaged. He said he asked her to marry him at the beach at sunset.

She announced it on Instagram, saying “Happy 9-year anniversary Warren! I’m so excited to announce we got engaged last Saturday! I love you and I’m so excited to call you finally my fiancé and to start planning a wedding!”

Their wedding hashtag is #twopeaysinapod.

And he also explained why he didn’t wear his signature “lucky” hat last week. It was because Sarah was in the audience. On Sunday night, she wore the lucky hat and he donned another.

Judges had high praise for Peay’s performance.

Lionel Richie said, “Your voice resonated with it. It was really great.”

Katy Perry said, “Your voice is like a bottle of grit.” It was a compliment.

Luke Bryan said it was a great choice that showed his range.

“I love it when you get to that gritty place,” he said.

Before he auditioned for “American Idol” last fall, Peay was an appliance repairman and worship leader in Bamberg, South Carolina.

On Monday’s live show, the top 10 will perform songs suggested by the judges. The top seven will be chosen.
