The American Institute of Architects Florida Northwest is partnering with Manna again for this year’s PensaCan: Demolish Hunger, Design Hope.

PensaCan is a competition where architectural firms and community amateurs create impressive structures made entirely out of full cans of food. Following a week-long display of the structures at Cordova Mall, all food is then donated to Manna for distribution to the hungry of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Each participant’s food structure will be displayed at Cordova Mall in the common area between Dillard’s and center court Friday through Oct. 7.

Through donations of food and financial gifts, PensaCan events have provided more than 41,230 healthy meals for those in need.

Community to walk for loved ones living with, lost to Alzheimer’s

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Pensacola area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This year’s event will mark the 10th year of the walk and a decade of community action to raise awareness and funds.

The walk will kick off with registration at 2 p.m. followed by the opening ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday at Community Maritime Park. Parking will be available at the Blue Wahoo Stadium.

While past events were mainly virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alzheimer’s Association is moving forward with hosting this year’s Pensacola Walk in person.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. On walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony – a mission-focused experience that signifies their solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent participants’ connections to Alzheimer’s disease and their personal reasons for walking.

Magdalene's celebrates anniversary with opening of Magdalene's House

Madgalene’s Gifts and Gathering’s first anniversary celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Organizers will also be celebrating the opening of Magdalene’s House, a long-term residential home for adult women survivors of sexual exploitation.

On Nov. 14, 2019, a Pensacola operator of multiple massage parlors pled guilty to charges of human trafficking. One of those locations was in Gulf Breeze. On April 1, 2021, Magdalene’s Inc. took possession of that building. The community rallied to Magdalene’s cause and donated more than $50,000 for renovations, furnishings, equipment, inventory and supplies, as well as countless hours of the time and energy of local volunteers. On Saturday, organizers are celebrating the one-year anniversary of the opening.
