DEMING – American Legion Bataan Post 4 in Deming, NM will carry out its traditional Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Mountain View Cemetery. The event will be centered around the veteran’s flagpole and monument.

“It is an honor for our small post to remember our veterans who are no longer with us for their sacrifices and service so that we may enjoy the freedoms they so bravely fought for,” said Ed Miller, post adjacent and U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Legion members and volunteers will plant American Flags at veteran’s gravesites at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the cemetery. “We invite the public to come out and help us with this event,” Miller said. “It means a lot to the post to know that our community is in support.”

At 11 a.m. on Monday, The United States Marine Corps League of Silver City will have its honor guard present the colors. Bataan Post Chaplain Andrew Chandler will give the invocation and guest speaker Jenifer Jones will handle the mic.

Jones is a Deming resident and a career healthcare professional. She is a third-generation graduate of Deming High School in her family. She is expected to share her thoughts on Memorial Day. Jones is also a candidate for Luna County office.

Bataan Post Commander Thom Barry will announce the Blue Star Mothers who will lay at the base of the flagpole and monument to veterans of the armed services.

Chaplain Chandler will give the benediction and the ceremony will conclude.

“We provide a lunch for all veterans and their families back at the post home following the Memorial Day ceremony,” said American Legion Post 0004 Auxiliary President Gwen Miller. “This is a tradition that the Auxiliary has continued for years.”
