Shelby American Legion Post 82 is sponsoring an event called the 5th Saturday Rifle Shooting Challenge on April 29, at the Foothills Public Shooting Complex, 283 Fielding Road, Cherryville.

Participants  need  to  bring  their  own  rifles  and  ammunition.

Shotguns and pistols are not permitted.

Legionnaire Bill Humphries, who chairs the event, said the goal is simple.

"We  want people to be safe and have fun. It's an ideal opportunity  for people to shoot a rifle they haven't shot in awhile - for everyday folks to shoot their rifle."

The rifle can be anything from a .22 caliber to a large bore.

Prizes will be awarded in six divisions:

  • Rimfire Iron

  • Rimfire Optic

  • Small Bore Iron

  • Small Bore Optic

  • Large Bore Iron

  • Large Bore Optic

Prizes will also be awarded for high score junior, senior, veteran, lady and permanently disabled shooter.

Preregistration is encouraged by going to practiscore.com.

Contestants will need to set up a free account and make separate registrations for each division in which they wish to compete.

The Safety Video and Wavier should be completed in advance. They are on the Shooting Complex website at foothillspublicshooting.cc.waiver.

For questions, email 5thSaturdayfunmatch@gmail.com.

Range day check in will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Competition begins at 11.
