American Legion to lead services at Sugarcreek, Walnut Creek, Dundee and others

SUGARCREEK − Memorial Day services, sponsored by Homer Weiss Post 494 of the American Legion, have been scheduled for Monday, May 29.

The Post Honor's Team will conduct a ceremony at 7:45 a.m. at the Veteran's Memorial in Walnut Creek.

The team will conduct honors at the Dundee Cemetery at about 8:30-8:40 a.m. Sugarcreek ceremonies will be at Eastlawn Cemetery at 9:30 am.

There will be a short ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at Union Hill Cemetery, at the grave of Homer Weiss, to honor veterans buried there. Post 494 will then go to Ragersville Cemetery. A service will be held in Baltic at 10:30 a.m.

Neal Slaby, nephew of Post Commander Linda Stefanov, will be the speaker at the Sugarcreek services.

Slaby was born and raised in Maple Heights. He joined the US Navy in 1998. Slaby was assigned to the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), based out of Norfolk, Virginia.

In five years at the command, he saw two deployments. His second deployment was in support of the military's initiating the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Today Slaby is a management and program analyst for the Department of Veterans Affairs, assigned at Wade Park in Cleveland. He and his wife, Ashley, live in Wickliffe.

Also participating at Sugarcreek will be the Garaway High School band, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts, Linda Stefanov and post chaplain Bill Johnson. Two students from Miller Avenue Elementary School will give the Gettysburg Address and In Flanders' Field. The students are Michael Hamsher, whose parents are Jason and Stacy Hamsher, and Macie Custer, whose parents are Jay Custer and Susan Saron. The Medal of Honor flag will be placed at the grave of Milton Blickensderfer, who earned the medal during the Civil War.
