American Legion/VFW baseball roundup: Willmar Post 167 hammers Minnetonka for the sweep

Jul. 11—WILLMAR — Dylan Arndorfer and Ian Koosman combined to throw a five-inning perfect game Saturday for Willmar Post 167.

Willmar won the American Legion baseball game 14-0 over Minnetonka. It was the first game of a doubleheader at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Willmar (10-3) completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory over the Mudhens in Game 2.

In Game 1, Andorfer went the first 2- 2/3 innings, striking out six. Koosman then followed with 2-1/3 perfect innings, striking out five.

Hunter Magnuson led Post 167 at the plate. He went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and seven RBIs.

Jaydon Garnhardt, Brandt Sunder, Mattix Swanson and Arndorfer all had two hits apiece for Willmar.

Post 167 is scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Monday at Buffalo.

Jason Malmgren tossed a complete-game five-hitter to lead Willmar past Minnetonka at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Malmgren struck out five and walked two, allowing one earned run.

Paynesville's comeback effort fell short as Starbuck won the championship game Sunday at Marthaler Park in Glenwood.

Jack Majerus and Nathan Dell helped fuel Starbuck to victory. The duo combined for five of the team's six hits.

Majerus led the team offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a double. Dell went 2-for-3 with two runs and a double.

Majerus and Dell also had strong performances defensively, combining for two innings in relief of Ryland Martin. The two allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout.

Hutchinson took third in the tournament by beating New London-Spicer 9-1. Rosetown won the consolation title with a 6-4 victory over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. Willmar finished seventh with a 12-11 victory over Morris.

In Saturday's first round, Starbuck beat DGF 8-3, Hutchinson defeated Morris 11-3, NLS beat Rosetown 6-4 and Paynesville knocked off Willmar 10-3.

In the semifinals, Starbuck beat Hutchinson 5-3 and Paynesville beat NLS 9-1. In the consolation semifinals, DGF beat Morris 5-2 and Rosetown defeated Willmar 5-2.

Six batters recorded a hit for Starbuck. Dylan Alexander and Paul Johnson each had a double.

Johnson pitched six of seven innings for Starbuck, striking out six and allowing no earned runs en route to earning the win.

Hutchinson's Ethan Lenz was the only batter for both teams to record a multi-hit performance. He went 2-for-4 with one run.
