It's been 20 years since audiences lost their minds over a film where five friends try to lose their virginity and we haven't been able to look at an apple pie the same way since.

Back when American Pie first premiered in the summer of 1999, no one could have predicted how much this gross-out film would make at the box office, eventually spawning an entire generation of teen sex comedies which all tried to recapture its crass yet heartfelt spirit.

While a whole American Pie franchise soon followed, the cast themselves have enjoyed various degrees of success in other projects since. Join us as we head back to band camp and catch up with the stars of the original to see what they’re up to now.

After Biggs thrust himself into the lead role (and an apple pie for good measure), his career went through a few ups and downs in the years that followed, appearing in just a few Kevin Smith movies and little else of note.

That all changed in 2013 when Jason landed the role of Piper Chapman's fiancé Larry Bloom on Orange is the New Black.

Biggs will next star in a new Fox sitcom called Outmatched, as well as the upcoming Jay and Silent Bob reboot, reuniting Jason with director Kevin Smith once again.

Chris Klein (Chris "Oz" Ostreicher)

After imbuing the 'kind jock' trope with unexpected warmth in American Pie, Klein's career led to some big opportunities in films like Election and We Were Soldiers, but these soon petered out in favour of smaller indie releases.

In 2005, Klein was arrested for drunk driving and checked himself into an alcohol addiction program a few years later in 2010. Things have picked up a bit since thanks to his memorable role in the Elijah Wood TV show Wilfred and recently Klein also won over fans as the villainous Cicada in The Flash season 5.

Nicholas was a popular child actor long before he played the 'nice guy' in American Pie, appearing in shows like Who's the Boss and Married... with Children.

After taking part in the first four American Pie movies and even recording a song for the American Reunion soundtrack, Nicholas has worked on a wide range of creative projects, including some indie films that he's directed and a number of albums he's recorded too.

Eddie Kaye Thomas (Paul Finch)

Thomas is probably best known for getting it on with Stifler's mum, but he's also starred in plenty of other projects, including more teen fare such as Freddy Got Fingered and TV shows like Scorpion and This Is Us.

However, his longest-running gig is still voicing Steve's friend Barry in American Dad, which first started way back in 2005.

Tara Reid (Vicky Lathum)

Although Tara Reid was one of American Pie's biggest breakout stars at first, roles in flop movies such as My Boss's Daughter and Josie and the Pussycats were soon overshadowed by her party lifestyle, as she lived it up in the tabloids alongside friends like Paris Hilton.

Reality TV beckoned, until the surprise success of SyFy movie Sharknado reignited Tara's career.

No longer sinking under the weight of those previous turkeys, Reid embraced her newfound popularity in the Sharknado franchise, appearing in all five movies while also releasing her own perfume line simply called 'Shark'.

Mena Suvari (Heather Gardner)

American Pie wasn't the only hit Mena Suvari had in 1999. She also received a BAFTA Award nomination for her work in the Oscar-winning film American Beauty and has appeared regularly in film and TV ever since.

While Suvari never quite reached this early success again, performances in Six Feet Under and American Horror Story kept her in the public eye. Last year, a starring role on a new show called American Woman promised even bigger things, but the Alicia Silverstone vehicle was unfortunately cancelled after just one season.

Shouldn't have pushed that "American Noun" theme so hard, maybe.

Most of the American Pie cast were subsequently typecast to some degree, and it was almost impossible to imagine Scott in particular as anyone else beside Stifler.

Despite strong work in Road Trip, Dude, Where's My Car? and The Dukes of Hazzard, his work in film gradually fizzled out, aside from a lead role in the Goon movies and his voice work in the Ice Age franchise.

Most recently, the actor formerly known as Stifler was cast as the new lead in the Lethal Weapon show, replacing Clayne Crawford, but unfortunately, the series was cancelled earlier this year.

Alyson Hannigan (Michelle Flaherty)

After she briefly traded in magic for music in American Pie, Alyson Hannigan continued starring in the Buffy franchise as Willow right up until it ended in 2003, and she also appeared in all of the American Pie sequels.

Following a dry "spell", the former witch then landed a major role on How I Met Your Mother which lasted for nine seasons. Most recently, Hannigan returned to her supernatural roots in the horror movie You Might Be The Killer and now stars in the second season of Pure, a Canadian show about drug trafficking.

Eugene Levy (Noah Levenstein)

Unlike most of the original cast, Levy was famous long before American Pie, working frequently alongside legendary comedy director Christopher Guest, and the pair continued collaborating after as well on films like For Your Consideration.

Voice work in animated movies like Over the Hedge and Finding Dory also kept the cheques rolling in, but these days, Levy might be even more famous now for his work in Schitt's Creek, where he stars alongside his son and co-creator, Daniel Levy.

Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia)

Following her role as an exchange student in American Pie, Elizabeth continued working in the teen genre with parts in Scary Movie and That '70s Show, as well as two of the American Pie sequels.

Since then, she's moved to Cape Town, South Africa, and works closely with her animal rights organisation, Animal Avengers. Funding for that might have come from Elizabeth's surprise success playing in celebrity poker tournaments, where she even competed in the World Series of Poker.

These days, the sex symbol tends to work more behind the camera, but fans should expect to see her still in the upcoming Jay and Silent Bob reboot alongside former American Pie co-star Jason Biggs.

Natasha Lyonne (Jessica)

Back in 1999, American Pie was just one of five films that indie icon Natasha Lyonne starred in and she continued to work hard in the years that followed too.

Unfortunately, her battles with drug addiction led to health issues that threatened to end her career prematurely.

Since then though, Lyonne has become more popular than ever thanks to a breakout role in Orange is the New Black and her critically acclaimed turn in Russian Doll (which she co-created) helped convince Netflix to renew the show for a second season.

Jennifer Coolidge (Jeanine Stifler)

Stifler's Mom has still got it going on following her now legendary performance as the original MILF in all four American Pie movies.

Like Levy, Coolidge has also worked closely alongside director Christopher Guest and she's starred in a wide range of comedy projects beyond his movies too, including Legally Blonde, Two Broke Girls and The Emoji Movie.

While it's unclear whether we’ll see another American Pie movie hit our screens anytime soon, the confirmed third Legally Blonde movie could see Coolidge reprise her other iconic role, Paulette Bonafonté, in the near future.
