American Red Cross seeking volunteers for fire prevention safety program

COLUMBUS (WCMH) – The Central & Southern Ohio Region of the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers for its 2024 Sound the Alarm campaign this spring.

Sound the Alarm aims to reduce home fire deaths and injuries through providing disaster preparedness information, home fire safety instruction and the installation of free smoke detectors. According to the American Red Cross over 90 percent of the disasters the Red Cross responds to are home fires.

Since the program’s inception more than 36,000 families in central and southern Ohio have been made safer through the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign.

Volunteer opportunities include leaving informational door hangers in designated neighborhoods, alerting residents that the Red Cross will be in the area to install free smoke alarms or the installation of free smoke alarms in area homes.

Those who sign up to participate would be working with other Red Cross volunteers and members of local fire departments between April 13 and May 4.

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to visit the American Red Cross’ Regional Sound The Alarm Hub to find information on the events scheduled throughout the region.
