“We can confirm that ‘American Rust’ will not be moving forward with a second season,” Showtime said in a statement. “We would like to thank our partners at Boat Rocker, our talented showrunner Dan Futterman and the rest of the wonderful writers, and our amazing cast led by Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.”

Daniels starred as Del Harris, chief of police of a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town full of good people making bad choices. When news of a murder rips through the town, Harris must decide what lengths he is willing to take to protect the son of the woman he loves (Maura Tierney).

Along with Daniels and Tierney, the show starred Bill Camp, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, Julia Mayorga, Mark Pellegrino, and Rob Yang.

Dan Futterman adapted the novel for the screen and also served as executive producer and showrunner for the series. Daniels executive produced in addition to starring. Michael De Luca also executive produced along with Adam Rapp, Paul Martino, Katie O’Connell Marsh for Boat Rocker Studios, and Elisa Ellis. Showtime co-produced the series with Boat Rocker. It was shot on location in Pittsburgh, PA.

“American Rust” received little love from critics upon its debut, with the show holding a 28% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review for Variety, Daniel D’Addario wrote that the show “thrives on contrivance and misunderstanding more often than human emotion, and attempts to draw out what it’s like for characters to live where they do more often seem to end in showy small-town cliché.”

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review first reported on “American Rust’s” cancellation.
