Who should be the American-Statesman girls and boys athlete of the week?

Several athletes shined and are finalists for the American-Statesman's girls and boys high school athletes of the week, a new feature this year honoring prep students that will be voted on each week by the public.

Students in all UIL varsity sports are eligible and the poll will launch on Tuesdays, close on Thursdays and winners will be announced Fridays each week.

Take a moment to look at some of the top performances in the last week and vote in our poll below.

Boys athlete of the week nominations

Justin Cannon, running back, Rouse

The Raider junior carried the ball 34 times for 339 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 42-23 win over Elgin. For the season, Cannon has posted 1,299 rushing yards on 191 carries with 17 touchdowns.

Alex Foster, defensive back, Vandegrift

The Viper junior had 15 tackles, including 10 solos, as Vandegrift rolled over Westwood 56-10. Foster has racked up 110 total tackles this season, with 77 of them solo.

Quinten Joyner, running back, Manor

The Mustang senior rushed for 350 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-10 victory over Stony Point. That included touchdown runs of 85 and 90 yards. Joyner has 4,824 yards and 63 touchdowns in his high school career.

Tyler Knape, offensive lineman, Westlake

The Chaparral junior was credited with five pins, five dominations and three knockdowns and did not allow a sack in a 70-10 victory over Johnson. Knape and his offensive line mates have helped the Westlake offense average 53.5 points per game.

Girls athlete of the week nominations

Riley Clinton, volleyball, Round Rock

Clinton had 61 assists as the Dragons defeated District 28-6A champion San Antonio Clark in the area round Friday, breaking Clark’s 16-match win streak. Clinton has more than 1,000 assists on the season.

MaeSyn Gay, volleyball, Burnet

The junior posted 12 kills and 10 digs as the Bulldogs defeated Taylor to win an area championship last week. Earlier in the week, Gay helped guide Burnet to a playoff-opening sweep of Robinson.

Mackenzie Plante, volleyball, Dripping Springs

Plante pounded 33 kills last week in playoff wins over Vandegrift and San Antonio Johnson to help the Tigers win an area championship. For the season, Plante leads the team in kills with 470 and aces with 65.

Kate Stengle, volleyball, Georgetown

Stengle dug 46 balls in playoff wins over Crockett and Lake Belton to help the Eagles win an area championship last week. For the season, Stengle has posted 411 digs, 55 aces (leading the team) and 526 assists.
