Americas, Riverside baseball players commit to UT-Rio Grande Valley

A pair of El Paso high school baseball players have verbally committed to play for UT-Rio Grande Valley.

Riverside pitcher/third baseman Orlando Samaniego and Americas third baseman Easton Moomau will attend the Western Athletic School, which is located in Edinburg. Both players are juniors.

They will join Americas senior baseball players Armani Raygoza and Ruben Gonzalez, who have also signed with the UTRGV.

"I liked my visit to the school and the program is doing some good things," Moomau said. "It'll be great to be there with my high school teammates."

UTRGV finished 32-26 last season and reached the WAC Championship series last year. One of the assistant coaches on staff is El Paso's Robert Martinez. Martinez recruited Samaniego's older brother, Aaron, to Howard College when Martinez was at that school.

Samaniego helped lead the Rangers to a regional semifinal appearance last season in Class 4A.

"I'm excited for the future and the program is doing some good things," Samaniego said. "To get this opportunity is special. The work continues and I have to keep working hard."
