Ames boys swimmers crush Indianola on senior night: Ames gets first victory in girls basketball

The Ames boys swimming team closed out its final meet the Ames Municipal Pool in style Tuesday by dismantling Indianola on senior night, 118-52.

The Little Cyclones won all 11 varsity events in a dominating performance. They took the top three in two individual events.

Eli Houseman, Chris Fisher and Tommy Flannery went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard individual medley for Ames. Houseman swam a time of two minutes, 0.43 seconds, Fisher finished in 2:03.82 and Flannery 2:14.98.

Hanyu Ning, Houseman and Fisher were the first three to finish the 100 butterfly. Ning swam a 53.18, Houseman a 53.34 and Fisher a 55.17.

Joe Flannery and Evan Feilmeyer were first and second in the 100 freestyle with respective times of 50.29 and 50.86. Josh Fisher and Ian McCorkle were first and second in the 500 freestyle after swimming a 4:46.10 and 4:58.62 respectively.

McCorkle won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.30. Joe Flannery swam a 22.74 in the 50 freestyle to beat the 23.36 by Indianola's Ben Mortvedt for first.

Ning swam a 53.36 in the 100 backstroke to easily beat the 56.04 by Indianola's Matt Coffelt for first.

Joshua Chen won the 100 breaststroke with the highlight performance of the day. Chen swam a pool-record time of 54.70, beating Indianola's Nathan Pollard by a full 6.31 seconds for first.

In relays the Ames 200 medley team of Ning, Chen, Houseman and Joe Flannery also set a pool record with a time of 1:36.84. Indianola was a distant second in 1:42.67.

Feilmeyer, Chen, Joe Flannery and Josh Fisher won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.37, beating Indianola's time of 1:32.70. Feilmeyer, Houseman, McCorkle and Joe Fisher took the 400 freestyle relay in 3:21.00, topping Indianola by 9.72 seconds for the victory.

Ames girls get first victory

The Ames girls picked up their first victory of the season in decisive fashion Tuesday.

The Little Cyclone girls romped past Des Moines East, 62-16.

Ames led 24-3 after one quarter to put the game away early. They had 39 rebounds, including an incredible 23 offensive boards, and only turned the ball over 13 times.

Sophomore Morgan Wahl led Ames with 14 points and six rebounds. Anisa Percival added 10 points and eight rebounds and Karsyn Pankonen seven points, six assists and three steals.

Eliza Loecke and Dakota Lewin both contribute eight points off the bench. Lewin also tallied five steals.

Haley Prakashan finished with six points and three steals. Aakiaya Mosley chipped in three points and eight rebounds, Jada Britten four points and three steals, Emma Evans two points and Maddison Pankonen six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Gilbert girls get past A-D-M

The Gilbert girls basketball team won its fourth game in a row Tuesday. The Tigers defeated Adel-Desoto-Minburn in a 50-46 battle at Adel.

Gilbert led 30-25 at the half behind a strong second quarter. The Tigers did just enough in the second half to make their lead stick and improve to 7-5 on the season and 5-4 in a tough Raccoon River Conference.

All-state guard Ava Hawthorne went for 22 points, five rebounds and two assists in the win. Freshman Mia Kautman added 10 points off the bench and Sydney Lynch finished with nine points and five steals.

Gilbert boys drop heartbreaker

The Gilbert boys suffered a 53-50 loss at the hands of A-D-M Tuesday.

The Tigers couldn't quite rally from a 43-37 deficit after three quarters. The loss was their seventh in a row, putting them at 2-7 in the RRC and 2-9 overall.

Birk Hanson went for 24 points after making 8 of 15 field goals, including 5 of 10 3-pointers, in a losing effort for Gilbert. He also had two steals.

Spencer Clatt added 11 points and three steals and Justin Terry four points and seven rebounds. Alex Ruba chipped in two points and six boards.
