The Ames Community School District is overhauling its playground equipment in an effort to improve inclusivity.

The multi-million dollar project will include inclusive playground equipment designed to accommodate children with diverse physical and cognitive abilities at each of the district's elementaries and the preschool center. The initiative reflects the district’s commitment to fostering an environment where every student can thrive and be successful, according to an Ames CSD news release.

“We’re thrilled to see the vision of inclusive playgrounds becoming a reality,” Edwards Elementary Principal Jessica Sharp said in the release. “These spaces will not only provide opportunities for physical activity but also promote social inclusion and positive peer interactions among our students.”

The phased project will be completed in the next two years and will commence as soon as schools break for summer vacation.

Some older equipment will stay put, with modifications

Ames CSD Director of Communications Amy DeLashmutt said the district will not be removing the older playground equipment completely. She said the district plans to improve the surface while making some of the current equipment more accessible.

"We are removing a few components and modifying the overall equipment structures to add inclusive access − ramps and features to serve all students," DeLashmutt said. "In addition, the surface will be replaced − remove the mulch and install a concrete surface with a cushioned surface designed with appropriate fall protection around the playground equipment."

Project funding has been allocated through the Physical Plant Equipment Levy (PPEL) and various donors. Design input was gathered from both staff and families to ensure the spaces will cater to specific student needs.

“The level of engagement and commitment from our staff and families has been remarkable,” Meeker Elementary Principal Lisa Clayberg said in the release. “Their valuable input has been instrumental in shaping the vision for these playgrounds, ensuring they are not only fun but also accessible to all.”

Playground construction will be done in phases

The first wave of schools receiving playground upgrades includes Northwood Preschool, Meeker, and Edwards Elementary, and will exceed more than $4 million. Those playgrounds are expected to be completed by the end of July.

Northwood's current playground equipment was installed in 2010. The cost for new equipment and modifications is $815,000.

The playground equipment at Edwards was installed in 2014. New equipment and modifications will cost about $1.7 million.

Meeker's playground was installed in 2015. The new, inclusive equipment and modifications are estimated to cost $1.3 million.

Sawyer, Mitchell, and Fellows Elementary schools will undergo similar upgrades next summer.

Ames boasts a strong elementary population

Ames elementary schools and the preschool center have an average enrollment of about 360 students. The enrollment for each school in 2023 is:

  • Edwards: 409

  • Fellows: 498

  • Meeker: 350

  • Mitchell: 285

  • Sawyer: 360

  • Northwood Preschool: 264

A little more than 2,100 students will benefit from the upgraded playgrounds.

“An inclusive playground is not just a physical space; it’s a place where children of all abilities come together to learn, grow, and play,” Northwood Elementary Principal Mary Morton said in the release. “I’m beyond thrilled to know these spaces will exist in our schools.”
