How Ames swept Lincoln in basketball, won conference in swimming and fell to Waukee NW in wrestling

The No. 1 Ames boys basketball team continued to roll with a convincing win over Des Moines Lincoln and the Little Cyclone girls knocked off the Railsplitters for their second victory of the season Tuesday in Des Moines.

The Little Cyclone boys cruised to a 78-44 victory. The win put them at 10-1 on the season.

The Ames boys swimming team also won a CIML Iowa championship last Saturday and the Little Cyclone wrestling team fell to Waukee Northwest at home Thursday.

After only leading by 10 at the half Ames exploded for 57 points over the final two quarters to pull away for its seventh consecutive victory. The Little Cyclones shot at a sizzling 62.2 % clip from the field and held Lincoln to 34.1 % shooting and they also forced 21 turnovers and posted a 25-18 rebounding advantage.

Tamin Lipsey had 24 points, 7 assists and 4 steals in the win. Trevion LaBeaux finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks and Corey Phillips added 19 points, 4 rebounds and 1 block.

Lucas Lueth added 9 points and 3 steals for the Little Cyclone boys.

Girls use big second half to prevail

The Ames girls outscored Lincoln 26-15 over the final two quarters to knock off Lincoln. They improved to 2-12 with the victory.

The Little Cyclone girls overcame 23 turnovers by making 17 of 30 free throws and holding Lincoln to 20 % shooting from the field.

Sophomore Morgan Wahl stepped up with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the girls. Anisa Percival posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, Karsyn Pankonen added 10 points and 4 assists, Maddison Pankonen chipped in 4 points and 5 rebounds and Haley Prakashan 2 points and 8 rebounds.

Ames wins CIML Iowa boys swim title

The Ames boys won the CIML Iowa meet last Saturday at the Trail Point Aquatics Center in Ankeny.

The Little Cyclone boys scored 494 points to beat Ankeny's score of 424 for first out of five teams.

Ames won 8 of 11 events at the conference meet.

Hanyu Ning, Joshua Chen, Eli Houseman and Joe Flannery won the 200-yard medley relay in one minute, 35.61 seconds. They easily beat Ankeny's runner-up time of 1:42.84.

Chen and Flannery were joined by Evan Feilmeyer and Josh Fisher in swimming a winning time of 1:28.54 in the 200 freestyle relay. The Little Cyclones just beat out Ankeny's 1:28.74 in a thriller.

Chen placed first individually in the 200 individual medley with a 1:56.67 showing and Houseman and Chris Fisher were second and third with respective times of 2:01.50 and 2:04.92. Chen also dominated the 100 breaststroke, swimming a 55.07 to blow away the 1:03.79 by Ankeny's Owen Schwebach for the gold.

Ning, Houseman and Chris Fisher went 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly with respective times of 53.28, 54.40 and 55.09.

Josh Fisher and Ian McCorkle were first and second in the 500 freestyle with respective times of 4:48.22 and 4:56.14. Ning won the 100 backstroke in 53.75, easily beating the 56.40 by Marshalltown's Marcus Barker for first, and Feilmeyer swam a 22.12 in the 50 freestyle to edge the 22.19 by Ankeny's Lance Swanepoel for first.

Wrestlers fall to Waukee Northwest

The Ames wrestling team suffered a 60-21 dual loss at the hands of Waukee Northwest Thursday at the Ames High Gym.

Cole Martin pinned Northwest's Jackson Reiland in 1:19 at 120 pounds and Josh Gray stuck the Wolves' Isaac Timm in 3:59 at 195 for the Little Cyclones. Jabari Hinson, ranked 6th at 113 in Class 3A, scored a 17-1 technical fall over Northwest's Joey Klaiber in 4:54 and Jackson Winkey pulled off a 10-2 major decision over Isaac Vollmecke at 152.
