AMHERST, Ohio (WJW) – An Amherst restaurant is closing its doors for good after an SUV crashed into its building in May of 2023.

Barra Restaurant Amherst made the announcement on it’s Facebook page Thursday saying, “With a heavy heart, we announce the indefinite closure of Barra Restaurant Amherst. Despite unwavering community support, the impact of a car accident has left us unable to recover. To our incredible patrons, thank you.”

An SUV smashed into the building on May 27 and left disastrous damage behind at the Barra Restaurant. According to Amherst police, the crash happened around 4:30 a.m. when a Volkswagen driving at a high speed smashed into Barra Restaurant.

The driver, 18-year-old Connor Cordy, and the 16-year-old passenger with him suffered minor injuries.

The Taco shop’s owner, Aaron Byington, was left to pick up the pieces.

“They were coming up the street and fell asleep but continued through the building. The scary part right now is that you can touch one thing and a domino effect could happen,” Byington told Fox 8 News at the time of the crash.

Byington told Fox 8 in an interview in June 2023 that the damage done by the crash was immense. However, he is just thankful everyone involved made it out ok.

According to the Thursday Facebook post, the last day to enjoy Barra Restaurant in Amherst will be on Sunday, Jan. 21.

“Join us for a final meal this weekend as we bid farewell to our outstanding staff. Finding the good in goodbye on our last day, Sunday, January 21st. 🖤 #BarraAmherstFarewell,” the Facebook post said.
