Amphicar reunion makes a splash at Put-in-Bay

PUT-IN-BAY - The Annual Amphicar Reunion was held Monday and Tuesday on Lake Erie and Put-in-Bay. Miller Ferry took the floating car-boats over to the island. The amphicars arrived on the island for a parade and then the boat-cars swam to Middle Bass Island. On the first day, the vehicles returned to Put-in-Bay ramps for rides and photos.

On Tuesday, the amphicars visited island sites including a swim past the Benson Ford Ship House. They returned to Port Clinton that night aboard the Miller Ferry.

The two-door convertible Amphicar Model 770 amphibious vehicles were designed by Hans Trippel and more than 3,800 vehicles were produced by the Quandt Group in Germany between 1960 and 1965.

The vehicles have a 4-cylinder engine and four wheels for driving on land and a pair of propellers at the rear for maneuvering on the water.

According to the Hagerty insurance company's website, a 1962 Amphicar Model 770 in good condition is valued at approximately $78,900, and some amphicars have sold for as high as $165,000.

The amphicars traveled to Put-in-Bay on the Miller Boat Line, for their annual reunion on Monday, July 31 to Tuesday, Aug. 1.
