Lakeland Teachers Guild hosting development event for educators

Jun. 6—The Lakeland Community College Teachers Guild will again be hosting "DesignCampCLE," a free, professional development experience held at the college's HIVE Makerspace.

The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 12 at 7700 Clocktower Drive in Kirtland.

According to the college, HIVE's DesignCampCLE engages and immerses educators in hands-on activities designed to foster authentic connections as teachers participate in a mini-design cycle while exploring the phases of human-centered design: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.

The theme for this year's camp is "Play," designed for K-12 educators to "joyfully experience" design-thinking practices through active participation and authentic learning.

DesignCampCLE, now in its fourth year, began in 2020 as a collaboration between the guild and HIVE.

The planning team, officials noted, is comprised of educators, makers, design thinkers, innovators and artists dedicated to providing teachers and administrators the opportunity to collaborate as well as provide tangible takeaways for use in their classrooms and beyond.

"We have created DesignCamp with a celebratory vibe for area educators and fully believe that high-quality professional development can be truly transformational," said Rachel Siegel, design and innovation specialist at Lakeland.

"We are bringing in some extremely engaging presenters, who will guide attendees through a variety of interactive breakout sessions, and we're really excited by the large number of teachers representing different regions of Ohio who have already registered for the event — it will be a great day of learning."

Educators from Ohio school districts in Lake, Geauga, and Cuyahoga counties, and the Crawford Central School District (western Pennsylvania) have participated in DesignCampCLE in previous years, Lakeland officials added.

This year, the camp will include educators from Portage, Summit, Knox and Franklin counties.

Educators can also earn a continuing professional development certificate for six contact hours by attending.
