Fresno police: COS assistant football coach Billy Wright shot dead by his father
College of the Sequoias assistant football coach is dead and police say his father killed him.
William “Billy” Wright, 31, was fatally shot around 11 a.m. Wednesday, while visiting his parents in Fresno, according to a Fresno Police Department press release.
Fresno Lt. Bill Dooley said police arrested Wright’s father, also named William, after “an argument erupted.”
“As the argument progressed, the father retrieved a handgun and ultimately shot William "Billy” Wright, striking him in the upper chest,” Dooley said. “The father remained on scene, was interviewed by detectives and later booked into the Fresno County Jail for murder.”
Wright suffered a single gunshot to the upper body and was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, “he was unable to survive his injury and was pronounced deceased," Dooley said.
COS released a statement saying the staff is “saddened” by the news and that Wright was set to return as an assistant coach for the 2022 football season.
He coached during the 2018-19 school year and also served as the Student Success Coordinator, but left COS the following spring.
“The world lost a wonderful person, educator and coach yesterday and the COS family mourns his passing,” COS Athletic Director Brent Davis said. “We will all miss Billy’s abundant energy and dedication to student success.”
