Discussion with Design Book Review Founders

Launched by John Parman and Elizabeth Snowden, Design Book Review has been publishing architecture and design book reviews since 1983. It stood as a forum for advanced thinking in the industry until it shuttered in 2001, with contributors spanning a wide range of design disciplines, as well as artists, historians, and philosophers. To celebrate the digital relaunch of Design Book Review, Los Angeles–based based critic, editor, and curator Mimi Zeiger will join founding publishers and editors Parman and Snowden and contributor Margaret Crawford to discuss the journal as well as delve into the present and future potential of design history, theory, and criticism. The free event will take place at 6 p.m. at YBCA on April 17. Tickets are available at the California College of the Arts portal and the dedicated Eventbrite page.

HASSELL+ Project Shortlisted for 2019 World Landscape Architecture Awards

The Resilient South City project by San Francisco’s HASSELL+ has been shortlisted on the 2019 World Landscape Architecture Awards out of 175 entrants from around the world. The firm proposed a resilient, responsive network of streets and creeks to become linear corridors for both water management and community gathering. The idea is to create a green corridor from Orange Memorial Park to a new public reserve on the shoreline to increase access along South San Francisco’s Colma Creek and reduce impacts of flooding and sea-level rise, restore native growth, and create a new space to enjoy the outdoors. Winners in each category will be selected today.

Design Within Reach Launches Jens Risom Collection

Right on the heels of its Larkspur grand opening, the furniture brand is kicking off the launch of the Block Island Collection by iconic designer Jens Risom at the brand’s San Francisco studio. The outdoor furnishings were created by Risom for his family vacation home on Block Island, Rhode Island. It wasn’t until years later that his children found the designs on a scrap of paper. Now, they are being brought to life at Design Within Reach. As a tribute, the designer's son, Sven Risom, will be on-site April 18 between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to discuss his father’s legacy in the design world, with a presentation at 10:30 a.m.
