New Amsterdam spoilers follow.

New Amsterdam season three will explore a blossoming romance for Dr Lauren Bloom, the drama's showrunner has confirmed. It's not all about Max and Helen, you see.

As season three of New Amsterdam continues in the US, series boss David Schulner has revealed more about Bloom's live-in love interest Leyla – and how their relationship first came about.

Speaking to TVLine, Schulner explained that Leyla is not the first woman Janet Montgomery's character Lauren has been with. She is, however, "the first woman Bloom has been in a relationship with".

Schulner went on to credit staff writer Shanthi Sekaran for devising Leyla and Lauren's relationship. "[Shanthi] pitched the whole story out with Leyla from day one," he recalled.

"'Bloom finds a doctor who she clashes with, finds out she's homeless and stashes her in the closet at New Amsterdam. Eventually, she gets found out and has to move in with Bloom, and they develop a romance together.'

"She just pitched that on day one, and I was like, 'Great! Let's do that!'"

While New Amsterdam fans are no doubt looking forward to seeing Lauren's sexuality explored further, Schulner went on to warn that it won't always be plain-sailing for the couple.

"Lauren will get tested and have to decide how important Leyla is to her and how much she's willing to risk to keep Leyla close," he said.

New Amsterdam airs on NBC in America, while Amazon Prime Video and NOW TV carry the show in the UK. It's also available on All4.
