Update, 7 p.m.:

Trains began moving again at 6:43 p.m., according to an Amtrak status update.

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train 777 heading northbound to San Luis Obispo was delayed by 3 hours and 55 minutes, now arriving in San Luis Obispo around midnight.

Original story:

A train hit and killed a person Sunday afternoon in Southern California, causing major delays for multiple trains from San Diego to San Luis Obispo until further notice.

The incident occurred about 2:45 p.m. An hour later, the person, whose identity is not available at this time, was confirmed dead.

Metrolink spokesperson Laureen Lopez said trains must wait until the Whittier Police Department and the Los Angeles County Coroner complete their investigation.

Lopez said the person was hit near the Metrolink Buena Park station.

With three track lines closed off, Lopez said once the main line opens up trains can start moving again.

Metrolink’s southbound train 664 struck the person, according to a Metrolink status update.

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, train 777 going northbound to San Luis Obispo, stopped at the Fullerton station after being notified of the incident. The train moved up to wait at Metrolink’s Buena Park station for an indefinite amount of time and to make room for other trains backed up.

Passengers are opting for Uber and other modes of transportation. Amtrak is also offering seats to Metrolink passengers affected by the incident.

Lopez urged people to “look and listen” while near train tracks and to be alert and vigilant.
