Amtrak service from Penn Station to Croton remains suspended indefinitely

Amtrak service from Penn Station to Croton-Harmon on the Empire Line was suspended Sunday after officials found several large holes in the structure of a parking garage above train tracks.

According to Amtrak spokesperson Jason Abrams, the Empire Line runs directly underneath the parking garage, which is independently owned, on West 51st Street in Manhattan.

The large holes in the structure of the garage show the tracks underneath, creating a safety concern for both cars in the garage and trains passing under it.

Abrams said New York City Department of Buildings officials learned of the holes on Friday. After department officials found more structural damage at the garage, all train service was suspended on Sunday and continued into Tuesday.

In a tweet on Sunday, Amtrak advised commuters to take Metro-North trains up to Croton-Harmon station and transfer to their regularly scheduled train to Albany. Passengers are able to use their Amtrak tickets as the fare for the Metro-North rides.

Amtrak said passengers can call 1 (800)-USA-RAIL to cancel or change their rides with a waived fee. Metro-North Hudson Line trains were still running on or close to schedule as of Tuesday morning.

Mayor Eric Adams posted on X, formerly Twitter, "As soon as the city became aware of the issue, @NYC_Buildings engineers quickly began assessing the situation, working with Amtrak teams and other city agencies to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians. Emergency work orders were quickly issued so the parking garage owners could begin addressing the issue."

Abrams said Amtrak has not yet determined when service will be restored between the stops.
