From Town & Country

Update: On March 23, Amy Klobuchar shared that her husband, John Bessler, has contracted the novel coronavirus, tested positive for the disease, and was being hospitalized. In a Medium post, the Senator revealed that he was put on oxygen, but not a ventilator.

"We love him very much and pray for his recovery. He is exhausted and sick but a very strong and resilient person," she wrote.

"I love my husband so very much and not being able to be there at the hospital by his side is one of the hardest things about this disease.

I hope he will be home soon. I know so many Americans are going through this and so much worse right now. So I hope and pray for you, just as I hope you will do for my husband. Meanwhile I am working in the Senate to get help to the American people."

He has since "turned the corner" and is recovering at home.

Original: Amy Klobuchar, the United States senator from Minnesota, and a former 2020 candidate recently suspended her campaign and has thrown her support behind Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden. Over the past few months, thanks to some particularly strong moments in the debates, Klobuchar has became an increasingly public figure and her family also also entering the spotlight.

Here's what we know about her husband, John Bessler:

Like Amy, John is a Native of Minnesota.

John was raised in Mankato, Minnesota, while Amy was raised in the suburbs of Minneapolis. John's parents, Bill and Marilyn Bessler, both taught at Minnesota State University, according to the Mankato Free Press.

John's parents are both supportive of their daughter-in-law's political achievements and ambitions. "Obviously we're very proud, as we are of all of our sons and daughter-in-laws," Marilyn told the outlet. "She's been a part of our family since she ran for Hennepin County Attorney; she's always tried to find common ground."

He and Amy Married in 1993.

John and Amy reportedly met at the Coyote Cafe in Minneapolis, and they married a year later, according to MPR News. The couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last July.

Back in 2013, Amy marked their 20th anniversary by sharing a sweet photo from their wedding day on Facebook, along with a caption that revealed the sweet way John proposed.

"Happy 20th anniversary to my husband John!" Amy captioned the photo. "You're supposed to give china for the 20th, but I went with bookends in honor of his marriage proposal in the non-fiction aisle of the former Hungry Mind bookstore. Our wedding included a canoe trip for guests and a discounted cake from a bakery in the St. Paul bus depot (I said no to the plastic swans). Two decades later I still say no to the swans & yes to the guy."

They Have One Daughter.

Their 24-year-old daughter, Abigail Bessler, graduated from Yale in 2017. Abigail currently works for a New York City councilman, and is also a stand-up comedian, according to Vogue.

In 2017, Amy posted a tribute to her daughter on Instagram in honor of her graduation. "Congratulations Abigail!" Amy wrote in the caption. "Dad and I were so proud of you as you crossed that stage today to get your college degree (with many high honors at that)."

Abigail was on hand when Amy announced her candidacy in February 2019. “I’m really proud of her," Abigail told CBS News at the time. "I’m excited for, like I said, what she’s campaigning on and the issues she cares about. I’m ready to spread that, and help her in any way I can."
