Becoming a parent is a transformational experience. Just ask Amy Schumer, who admits motherhood has changed her in ways she never thought possible. The comedian and husband Chris Fischer welcomed son Gene Attell Fischer back in May, and she has been documenting her new-mom journey on social media ever since. But while at her “first thing post-baby” on Tuesday night, Schumer opened up about just how much becoming a mom has shifted her perspective.

Taking a break from breast pumps and baby wipes, Schumer made her way to an event benefitting the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project in New York on Tuesday. While there, ET’s Rachel Smith picked Schumer’s brain about the impact Schumer’s baby boy has had on the Growing comedian — and the new mom was quick to admit that motherhood has changed her “in a million ways.” Although, hilariously, she fessed up to one way specifically: “I’m just nicer to my mom,” she said, laughing.

But, really, she’s largely just amazed by how much having a child opens up your heart. “I didn’t know I could love someone that much, no offense to my husband, who’s here,” she said, adding, “But yeah, I think we’re both shocked by the level of love that’s possible.”

Of course, feeling so strongly about another human being means there is an increased potential to miss them. Schumer can attest to that herself, having now officially returned to work post-baby. “5 months today and like all moms, I love him so much it hurts,” Schumer captioned a photo of herself with baby Gene back in early October.

She continued, addressing her return to work, “I’m feeling strong and good and like I’m still a human being with interests and ambitions and goals I’m excited to reach. It’s felt good to be back at work.” Admittedly, she says, there have been days she’s cried. However, she ultimately feels okay when she has to leave her son for work. “It’s mostly good to be back and the breaks energize me to be a better mom and appreciate our time even more.”
