'New' Amy Winehouse song created by AI to raise mental health awareness

A ‘new’ song by Amy Winehouse has been created by artificial intelligence (AI), it has been revealed.

The track – entitled Man, I Know – was made as part of the Lost Tapes Of The 27 Club, a project raising awareness around mental health.

The project from non-profit organisation Over The Bridge focuses on music stars who, like Winehouse, died at the age of 27. This includes artists such as Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix.

According to the Lost Tapes website, an AI algorithm listened to melodies and lyrics from the late stars.

The algorithm “learned from the music, then generated a string of all-new hooks, rhythms, melodies, and lyrics”.

An audio engineer then used these to create the new music.

It’s hoped the project will raise awareness of mental health issues and encourage people to get the help they need.

Sean O’Connor, who is on the board of directors for Over The Bridge, told Rolling Stone: “What if all these musicians that we love had mental health support?

“Somehow in the music industry, (depression) is normalised and romanticised... Their music is seen as authentic suffering.”

Winehouse released her debut album, Frank, in 2003, but achieved widespread fame and international acclaim with her follow up, 2006’s Back To Black.

She enjoyed huge success with hit singles such as Rehab and Valerie but also fought a well-publicised battle with drug and alcohol abuse.

The singer was found dead at her home on 23 July, 2011 aged 27, and an inquest later found that she had died of alcohol poisoning.
