Analysts Just Shaved Their Formula One Group (NASDAQ:FWON.K) Forecasts Dramatically

The analysts covering Formula One Group (NASDAQ:FWON.K) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with the analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon.

After the downgrade, the ten analysts covering Formula One Group are now predicting revenues of US$1.9b in 2021. If met, this would reflect a sizeable 58% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. The loss per share is anticipated to greatly reduce in the near future, narrowing 84% to US$0.43. Yet prior to the latest estimates, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$2.2b and losses of US$0.20 per share in 2021. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The consensus price target was broadly unchanged at US$48.63, perhaps implicitly signalling that the weaker earnings outlook is not expected to have a long-term impact on the valuation. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Formula One Group at US$53.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$37.00. These price targets show that analysts do have some differing views on the business, but the estimates do not vary enough to suggest to us that some are betting on wild success or utter failure.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. The analysts are definitely expecting Formula One Group's growth to accelerate, with the forecast 58% annualised growth to the end of 2021 ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 10% per annum over the past three years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to grow their revenue at 16% per year. Factoring in the forecast acceleration in revenue, it's pretty clear that Formula One Group is expected to grow much faster than its industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at Formula One Group. Unfortunately, analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, although our data indicates revenues are expected to perform better than the wider market. The lack of change in the price target is puzzling in light of the downgrade but, with a serious decline expected this year, we wouldn't be surprised if investors were a bit wary of Formula One Group.

Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Formula One Group going out to 2025, and you can see them free on our platform here.
