Ancestry Website Forebears Will Reveal How Many People Share Your Surname
If your name’s not down you’re not getting in.
That isn’t something you are likely to hear if you browse on Forebears.io, a website that contains a massive database of surnames and their history.
The site lets you check how many people in the world share your surname and where they live - if you’re called Smith or Jones, that is going to be a lot.
Forebears also traces the history of surnames - in all, it has information on the meanings and distribution of 11 million last names.
The site says it is a “reference aid that helps researchers find historical and genealogical records naming their ancestors”.
There are 17,800 people on the planet with the surname Beckham, for instance, although not all of them are as famous as David and Victoria.
Beckham is the 28,392nd most common surname in the world, according to Forbears, and most Beckhams live in the US.
