Anchorage firefighters bring blaze at Fairview auto body shop under control
May 28—A fire broke out at an auto body shop on Gambell Street on Friday afternoon in Fairview, causing temporary road closures as Anchorage firefighting crews worked to bring the blaze under control.
The Anchorage Fire Department was called to a commercial structure fire shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, according to Assistant Chief Alex Boyd, and found an auto body shop "heavily involved" in fire.
He said 24 units responded to the scene, and one person was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for non-life threatening injuries. Boyd said at this time, it appears the fire was caused by "work within the building." It was called in by employees of the auto shop, he said.
People were inside the business at the time the fire started, but all were able to make their way out.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control by 4:52 p.m., Boyd said.
Authorities on Friday afternoon temporarily closed the southbound lanes of Gambell Street at its intersection with 15th Avenue, as well as eastbound 15th Avenue between Ingra Street and Gambell, for a few hours as crews responded and cleaned up the area.
