Anchorage Mayor Bronson appoints new human resources director

May 4—Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson this week announced Tyler Andrews as the city's new human resources director.

Andrews will begin his new role Monday, according to a statement from the mayor's office Wednesday.

Andrews previously worked as the executive vice president of employee services and communications for the Chugach Electric Association, and has also worked as a senior manager of labor relations for Alaska Communications Systems, according to his resume.

He has also held multiple human resources or labor relations roles with the state, and served for just over a year as human resources manager for the City of Ketchikan, according to his resume. Andrews is a member of the board governing the Alaska Labor Relations Agency. He's served as a management member since 2008, according to the mayor's office.

"Tyler's range of experience in labor relations, human resources, customer service, communications, and safety show his ability to lead the Municipality's Human Resources Department," Bronson said in the prepared statement.

Andrews must still face an Assembly confirmation vote before permanently taking the role in the Bronson administration.

He replaces Niki Tshibaka, who resigned in February. Since Tshibaka's departure, the city's labor relations director, Raylene Griffith, has served as acting director.

Tshibaka has been at the center of a lawsuit against the municipality involving the former director of the city's Office of Equal Opportunity, who accused Bronson of firing her in retaliation for investigating alleged illegal acts by the mayor's leadership team. The Assembly and the Bronson administration plan to discuss a settlement related to that lawsuit Friday.
