Andersons mark 60th wedding anniversary

Ben and Wennie Anderson of Monroe are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary today.

Mr. Anderson married Winifred (Wennie) Steinman Dec. 9, 1961, at St. Mary Catholic Church.

The couple's daughters are Christine (Curt) Condon of Lewis Center, Ohio, and Cynthia (Phil) Lashley of Hudson, Ohio. They also have five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mr. Anderson is a 1958 graduate of Monroe High School and attended Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. He worked for Dobie Printing of Monroe for several years and later became a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 2005 after 39 years of employment.

He enjoys photography and spending time on his computer. He was president of the Monroe Camera Club for years and was on the board of the Photo Arts Club of Toledo. He enjoys photo competitions, has sold many of his prints and earned many awards for his photography.

Mr. Anderson also enjoys martial arts and earned a Black Belt in Judo. He has taught Judo at the Monroe Family YMCA for many years. He has run ultra-marathons, 50- to 70-miles in length, and has backpacked on the Appalachian and North Country Trails. He also enjoys steelhead fishing.

Mrs. Anderson is a 1959 graduate of MHS and graduated from the X-ray technology program at the University of Toledo. She also trained at and was employed by the old Monroe Hospital on Maple Blvd.

Later she worked for Aramark and Sodexo food services and was the elementary kitchen manager for Custer 1, Christiancy and Manor Schools. For seven years she was a caterer for Monroe Public Schools, under the direction of Aramark. Because of COVID, she retired in January, 2021, after 40 years of service.

Like her husband, Mrs. Anderson also enjoys photography and was president of the Monroe Camera Club and president of the Photo Arts Club of Toledo. She has earned many awards for her photography and her photo appeared on a magazine cover.

She also enjoys cooking, baking and her cats. The Anderson tend a colony of feral cats, offering them food and safety. Mrs. Anderson enjoys movies, especially scary ones.

“The couple hopes to continue the adventure of exploring new places for that perfect, unusual photograph that is waiting for them to take,” said their family.
