Andress girls soccer team wins area round match in double overtime

The area round of the UIL soccer playoffs was a successful one for El Paso teams. Here is a look at how they fared.

Class 5A girls

  • In Midland, Andress defeated Abilene Wylie, 5-4, in overtime. The match was tied at 3 after regulation, but Abigail Gonzalez and Bella Morgas each scored goals in the overtime period for the Eagles. Morgas and Mileena Griego each scored two goals for the Eagles.

"It was a tough, hard fought match," Andress coach Angela Mendiola said. "The heat was brutal and we aren't used to that heat just yet. It affected both teams but we pushed through, we had to sub players in to get fresh legs and our kids stepped up and showed lots of grit and determination."

It was the third area round title for Mendiola as coach of the Eagles.

  • Del Valle earned a 5-4, overtime win against Lubbock Monterey. Del Valle led 2-0, but Lubbock Monterey went up 3-2 before Del Valle's Natalia Garcia tied the match at 3-3 to force the overtime period. Lubbock Monterey took the lead, 4-3, in the overtime period but back-to-back goals from Mia Serrano gave Del Valle the win.

"It was a tiring game, but a great game," Serrano said. "Our hard work has paid off and we have a strong desire as a team. We've come a long way this season."

Added Del Valle coach Stephanie Sazo: "Our kids showed so much fight and determination. I am really proud of them and the way they kept coming back in this match."

Andress and Del Valle will face each other in the regional quarterfinals.

  • In Midland El Paso High lost Abilene High, 4-2.

  • In Midland, Chapin fell 1-0 to Amarillo High.

Class 6A girls

  • Franklin saw its season come to end with a 3-0 loss to Byron Nelson.

Class 6A boys

  • Eastlake defeated Southlake Carroll, 3-1. The Falcons got goals from Gael Barragan and Gustavlo Muela.

  • Keller Timber Creek eliminated El Dorado with a 3-0 win.

  • Pebble Hills saw its season end with a 3-1 loss to Byron Nelson.

  • Franklin nearly rallied from a 2-0 deficit and lost to Euless Trinity, 5-4. Edgar Alvarez scored two goals for the Cougars and Santiago Norzagaray and Emiliano Estrada each scored one.

Class 5A boys

  • In Midland, Abilene High made a first half goal hold up in a 1-0 win against Andress to advance to the regional quarterfinal round.

  • Burges' season came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Lubbock Monterey.

  • Bel Air continued its strong season with a 3-1 win against Amarillo Caprock.

  • Del Valle saw its season come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Amarillo Palo Duro.

Class 4A boys

  • Riverside moves on to the regional quarterfinals after a 4-1 win against Burkburnett. Isaac Santoyo scored three goals and Jose Varela scored one for the Rangers. Santoyo has scored six goals in two playoff victories.

  • Irvin defeated Pampa, 3-2, for its second playoff victory. Omar Escobedo scored two goals for the Rockets and Angel Vidales scored one.

  • Bowie lost a 2-1 decision to Wichita Falls High. Cesar Duran scored for the Bears.

  • San Elizario defeated Borger, 5-2 and will face Riverside in the regional quarterfinals. Alan Jurado and Eduardo Marquez scored two goals each to lead the Eagles and Angel Valdez scored one goal. The Eagles are 21-2-1 on the season.

Class 4A girls

  • San Elizario defeated Burkburnett, 1-0, on an overtime goal by Angela Chairez with an assist from America Barrera. Goalkeeper Melany Duran had a key save for the Eagles in a one-on-one situation. "It was a great win for us," Chairez said. "We proved as a team we could get it done. It was a tough match, but we came up big when we had to."
